What our supporters are saying...

"We could really tell the ECOS students are learning a lot when we heard comments about 'non-point source pollution' and 'turbidity' without any prompting."
- Josh Vincent, Black and Veatch

"It was fun to be around young, inquisitive minds and to see the students remain engaged with learning and discussion late in the day! "

Volunteers

Green Works relies on the assistance of many dedicated volunteers.  Here are several who give an incredible amount of time assisting our organization, volunteering in the classroom and mentoring our students.  (alphabetical listing)

Brennan Crawford – Brennan is our back-up classroom assistant.  He’s also great at writing and provides grant review and feedback.  And last summer Brennan helped create the curriculum for our student internship orientation.

Bill Fessler, KCMO Parks & Rec. Department – Bill has a background in secondary education and it really shows when he interacts with the students.  Bill is our primary contact for planting projects in the parks and he also drives the bus for most of our field trips.  The students are always excited to see “bus driver Bill.”

Rebekah Foote – Rebekah can find just about anything Green Works needs, and it’s always free or low-cost.  This fall Rebekah helped round-up classroom supplies and storage cabinets and even picked up the cabinets and helped with delivery.  Anything from art supplies and painting smocks to hats, gloves and scarves for winter field trips, we can count on Rebekah.

Katie Grotegut – A phenomenal researcher and writer, Katie provides valuable assistance with grant proposals.  And Katie is always one of the first people to volunteer to help with a service learning project or Saturday event.

Lisa Hays, Fresh Perspective – Lisa is a marketing whiz.  She helps design our publications and can often get them printed for free.  Lisa also reviews our website and provides feedback on design and content.

Pam Hoelzel – Pam’s love for art and the environment has translated into periodic visits to the Nelson Museum for our students.  As a docent at the museum, Pam has designed tours to show the students art using recycled and natural materials.

Rachel Norton, Tetra Tech – Rachel serves as a tireless mentor for one of our students.  She has helped her mentee plan for college, and assisted with housing issues and transportation.  And Rachel has provided advice and counsel along the way to keep her mentee in school and on a path for success.  Our student knows she can rely on Rachel as a positive, stable adult in her life.

Rita Norton – Rita has a background in teaching and loves teenagers.  Rita assists with the ECOS class, attends field trips and gets her hands dirty with planting projects.  No matter the weather, Rita is participating right along with the students, and providing feedback and suggestions on the curriculum from her years of teaching.

Wendy Parrett, Mo. Department of Conservation – Wendy works at the Discovery Center and serves as our main contact for summer internships at the center. Through her work with our students, she has become a valuable advocate for them beyond their internship experience. And with a background in education, and her many connections in the community, Wendy is always identifying new educational opportunities for our students to incorporate into our ECOS program.
